Henry Robinett – I Have Known Mountains

It’s finally here! Henry Robinett’s new and 5th CD! It’s melodic jazz with integrity. Great instrumental songs. The album boasts a line up that includes the great Tom Brechtlein on drums, and pianist Joe Gilman. Brechtlein is the drummer for Kenny Loggins, as he was for Chick Corea, Robben Ford, Wayne Shorter among countless others. Gilman, Henry’s long time cohort, played on most of HRs CDs, and has been holding down the piano chair for a who’s who in jazz.

Guitarist Robinett lived and studied with the late great bassist and composer Charles Mingus. He taught at University of the Pacific, American Institute of Music in Vienna and various colleges in northern California. His first album with Artful Balance Records got a prestigious four star review. His band The Henry Robinett Group won many awards in northern California, including Sammies and Sacramento Magazines’s Musician and Band of the Year.

I Have Known Mountains is a melodic mixture not easily categorized. Henry’s beautiful guitar playing abounds but never loses sight of the songs as its main focus. Gilman’s brilliant piano playing and Brechtlein’s drums steer the course. “Change” is the albums opener, “Maybe Tuesday, and “Crash” are some of the most radio accessible tunes. But the title track “I Have Known Mountains” is definitely a standout. “American Rivers” is a tour de force 11 minute song that may truly make your hair stand on end. Straight Ahead jazz does not get over looked with “Sprung” and the favorite “Zebra Crossing.”

This, his 5th CD, is his first release in almost 15 years! I say Welcome back! This has been too long overdue!
