“I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” by Doug Ferony

If you’ve ever listened to Doug Ferony’s music before, you already know that he has a way with words akin to what you might expect out of the most classic era in vocal pop music, and in his new single “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” he continues to develop and refine his skills more than three decades into his career.

Ferony’s modus operandi is relatively simple – never get in the way of a simple hook and always tend to the harmony with as fragile a touch as you would a newborn baby, and this is yet another instance in which his efficiency as a performer is matched only by his management of a relatively complicated arrangement (for the typical singer, that is). Not once do we see this player sweat behind the microphone; truth be told, there’s a sense of swagger to his delivery that is likely to make you curious about the depth of his discography as well as his future projects still sitting on the horizon. I’ve been listening to this artist for a number of years now, and in “I’m Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” he reminds me why I got interested in his songcraft in the first place.

It’s easy to copy the blueprint that guys like Frank Sinatra so brilliantly put forth a few generations ago in terms of construction, but giving us the kind of vocal charisma that this man does from one verse to the next is something that just can’t be taught, nor learned, in any school I’ve ever heard of. Ferony’s movements in this piece are consistently deliberate.

He uses timing and the absence of melodicism to tell us a story that linguistics could never convey on their own, and while I myself have come to expect as much out of any performance he gives both in and outside of the recording studio, I think there’s an argument to be made that he’s going to surprise a lot of newcomers to his sound with just how attentive and full-bodied his caliber of work truly is.

“I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” flirts with a lot of retro aesthetics, but at the end of the day, the emotionality that it encapsulates both sonically and poetically is simply too strong and forward to be resisted, no matter how familiar you may or may not be with the discography of its creator. In the past ten years alone, Doug Ferony has yet to fail when it comes to giving his audience the kind of lusty, melody-centric content we’ve all come to crave and demand from the purists in the pop genre, and I think that this latest release doesn’t just live up to the standards Ferony has set for himself – it actually exceeds them by leaps and bounds on the strength of how it sits beside the other tracks in his complete body of work. He’s always evolving, and this latest look is among his best in my opinion.
