Remembering Tom Petty – Michael Gaither

Two videos and a couple of “this just in” shows for October.

It’s SO hard to believe that it was exactly a year ago today when we were all reacting to the sudden, tragic (and unfortunate/necessary) loss of Tom Petty. “Musical Hero” is an understatement. Petty starting making records (remember records?) not too long after I started buying them. He’s also one of the reasons I started writing. In this quite toxic environment of disagreement and opinions we seem to live in (I’m not going there), Tom Petty is still one of the few things everyone can agree on.

That said, I’ll keep this short. Here’s me and the band covering “Learning to Fly”. Seems appropriate. I’m also dropping in my little tribute song, “Always a Friend of Mine,” in case you missed it the last time around. This solo version was recorded on KPIG right after I wrote it last year on the day he passed. There’s also a nice, full-band take on it with me and My Best Friends in the music player on our new band page.

Besides that, two shows suddenly dropped in for the month. Wanted to share, and hope you can make one or both of them.

Saturday October 6th
Discretion Brewing / 703 41st Ave, Suite A, Soquel

An all-day voter registration drive and a celebration of Discretion’s new can release, “ParticIPAte”. We’ll be in trio mode (me, Eliza James on harmony, and Greg Abelar on bass) from noon to 2:00pm. No cover.

Sunday October 21st
Crystal Bay Farm / 40 Zils Road, Watsonville CA

Our first time at this GREAT local organic farm. (It’s pumpkin season, ya know). Joshua Lowe kicks off music at 1:00pm, followed by us (me, Eliza, and Jeff Baker on percussion.) No cover.

Thanks again for all the support. Be nice to each other, and don’t forget to spin “Damn the Torpedoes” today. And tomorrow. And…
