Until recently, I was a person who had truly hoped the worst and most obscene examples of racial discrimination, were behind us. Obviously, I was proven to be soundly wrong. It’s important to remember that there are people still very much alive, today, that can remember a time of segregation. The mere concept of segregation is one that is almost incomprehensible to think was actually enforced by law. You absolutely have to consider this, when you evaluate the unrest and angst that has risen to the surface, as the result of recent events.
India born, Singer/Songwriter, Rohan Solomon, has taken the most powerful weapon he has in the fight against racism, to make a bold statement. On “We Demand Change,” the highly talented and decorated, Solomon, has reached new heights as a Songwriter. “We Demand Change” is original, immediate, and unforgettable. Solomon, responsibly poses the question of, if not now, when? He has come to the conclusion that asking will simply no longer suffice.
The talking point coming out of “We Demand Change” will be the steady pulsations of gunfire, near the opening of the track. We hear a rifle clicking, and then an unmistakable shot, on what seems like an endless loop. For some it will eventually prove to be insufferable, but initially, it’s an attention grabber. The song then takes an even more unexpected turn, into an Cat Stevens like folk ballad. All the while, a battalion of shots continue to ring out, in the background.

Rohan Solomon is not only a fantastic songwriter, but he is an equally terrific singer. The thing is, is that his vocals, as far as tone and energy, don’t exactly match the decidedly darker mood of the music. It’s very likely an intentional idea, and regardless, it’s still rather ingenious. All of these converging aspects make “We Demand Change,” a song that’s virtually impossible to conveniently pigeonhole. This is the music of the future, and the very change that Solomon is seeking, is being ushered in by his own unique self expression.
“We Demand Change” is a highly recommended addition to your playlist. This song checks off all of the boxes of what we look for in a great piece. The subject matter is exigent, and highly pertinent. Rohan Solomon should be commended for taking risks, as a more traditional approach would have been safer. It’s not a perfect track and that’s what make it so accessible and worthy. The production value gives Solomon instant credibility, and potentially grants him access to a greater reach. His courage to take a stand, and embrace his own individuality, is an embodiment of the message that his new single, advocates. It seems a little change, would do us all a whole lot of good.
