Up and Coming Talent “Queen Kat”

We got the chance to interview up and coming talent Queen Kat to learn more about her music journey.

What is your artist name or what name do you go by?
My artist name is Queen Kat, My name is Katherine and everyone knows me by Kat.

What city do you represent?
I was born and raised in Guatemala until the age of 9 and ended up in the Bronx since. You could say I represent them both.

What got you started making music, or your craft?
I’ve dreamt about being a singer/songwriter since I was young. My parents would take me to karaoke restaurants where I would sing in Spanish. I was in all my school talent shows since I was in the 6th grade, whether it was singing, dancing or even modeling. Recently the experience that got me into writing music again was a cab ride back from a night out with friends. We were chanting in the back saying « shitting me or is you kiddding me » it made me wonder why that wasn’t a song already and I began to write.

Any goals you want to achieve this year?
One goal would be to have my song played on the radio. I would like for as many people to hear my music that way it can help them the way it helped me.

Anyone you would like to work with?
I would like to work with anyone really. I want to learn to get out of my comfort zone and try different beats that I normally wouldn’t do on my own. I want to work with individuals who are passionate about what they do. I want to work with people who challenge, motivate and support one another.

Any up and coming artist you look up to or would like to shout out?
Yes, actually I have met a lot of great people going through this process and would like to thank Danilo @magicdanilo, Jnotes @jnotes1of1, Spazz @freemanboy_1291_super_star, Kurry Rose @kurry_rose, DC Millionz @dcmillionz, Meyoshi @meyoshi_jean and Poet @royal_da_poet_muzic. Each and every one of these individuals support one another and want to see each other succeed. I have been fortunate enough to have met them and can’t wait to work alongside them.

What is the most recent project you’re working on?
Up until recently I was working on my EP “chosen”. It tells a story about how tough breakups are and the stages you go through. Currently I have been working on a feature with Kurry Rose. It is definitely a different vibe than what I normally work on but I hope everyone relates and enjoys!

What struggles do you go through as an up and coming artist?
Some of the struggles I have gone through as a female artist have been eye opening. It’s hard to find people who actually care and enjoy your music and that are not just trying to get in your pants. It’s also a little intimidating because there aren’t that many female artists. I’ve been at various performances being the only female.

How do you overcome these struggles?
You gotta have tough skin. Take it event by event and keep trying because not everyone is the same and you do end up meeting and networking with great people. You have to continue to invest in yourself and it’s not easy. I myself struggle with confidence but I still perform and because of doing so I am gaining that comfortability I need.
